Used to (do)

may be we hear it much but don't know exactly what it means.

1- when we say that something used to happen= something happened regularly in the past but no longer happens.

عندما نقول أن شيء كان يحدث = شيء حدث بانتظام بالماضي ولم يعد يحدث.

مثــــــــــــال : for example:

I used to play tennis a lot but I don't play very often now.

أنا كنت العب التنس كثيراً لكن أنا لا العب في اغلب الأحيان الآن.

Diane used to travel a lot. These days she doesn't go away so often.

ديان كانت تسافر كثيرا. هذه الأيام هي لا تذهب خارجا في أغلب الأحيان.

2- we also use used to for something that was true but is not true any more:

نحن أيضاً نستعمل used to لشيء كان حقيقة ولم يعد كذلك.

مثـــــــــال : for example:

This building is now a furniture shop. It used to be a cinema.

هذا المبني هو الآن متجر أثاث. كان سينما.

I used to think he was unfriendly. But now I realize he's a very nice person.

أنا كنت أظن هو غير لطيف . لكن الآن أدركت أنه شخص لطيف.

I've started drinking coffee recently. I never used to like it before.

أنا بدأت أشرب القهوة حديثاً , أنا ما كنت أفضلها من قبل.

3-i used to do something is past. There is NO PRESENT form. You cannot say I use to do to talk about the present, BUTto talk about the present of USED TO use the present simple(I do).

أنا كنت أفعل شيئاً بالماضي. لا يوجد لها صيغة مضارعة . لا تستطيع أن تقول أنا أستعمل لأفعل لتتكلم عن المضارع , لكـــنلتتكلم عن مضارع used to تستعمل المضارع البسيط (أنا أفعل).

مقارنـــــــــــة : Compare past: he used to smoke / there used to be .

Present: he smokes / there is.

في الماضي: هو كان يدخـــــن / هناك كان

في المضـارع: هو يدخن / هناك يكون

مثــــــال: por ejemplo:

We used to live in a small village but now we live in London.

نحن كنا نعيش بقرية صغيرة لكن الآن نحن نعيش بلندن.

There used to be four cinemas in the town. Now there is only one.

هناك كان أربعة صالات للسينما في المدينة. الآن هناك فقط واحدة.

He used to smoke 40 cigarettes a day. But now he smokes just one a day.

هو كان يدخن أربعين سيجارة باليوم. لكن الآن يدخن فقط سيجارة واحدة باليوم.

4- the normal question form IS did (you) use to..?

الصيغة الطبيعية للسؤال هي ((did (you) use to..?.

مثــــــــــال: for example:

Did you use to eat a lot of sweets when you were a child?

هل كنت تأكل كثيراً من الحلوى عندما كنت طفلاً؟

5-the negative form IS didn't use to..(used not to...) is also possible.

صيغة الجمل السالبة هي didn't use to.. (used not to..)

مثـــــــــال : for example:

I didn't use to like him.(Or I used not to like to him)

أنا لم أكن أفضله ( أو أنا لم أكن افصله)

6- CompareI used to do and I was doing:

I used to watch TV a lot.

أنا كنت أشاهد التلفاز كثيراً.

(I watched TV regularly in the past, but I no longer do this)

(أنا شاهدت التلفاز بانتظام في الماضي, لكن لم أعد أعمل هذا )

I was watching TV when the phone rang.

أنا كنت أشاهد التلفاز عندما رن الهاتف.

(I was in the middle of watching TV )

(أنا كنت في منتصف مشاهدة التلفاز)

7- don't confuse I used to do and I'm used to doing , the structures and meanings are different:

لا تلخبط بينI used to do و I'm used to doingالتراكيب والمعاني تختلف:

مثال: for example:

أنا كنت أعيش وحيـــــــداً I used to live alone.

(I lived alone in the past but I no longer live alone)

أنا عشت وحيداً بالماضي لكن لم أعد أعيش وحيداً الآن)

لكـــــــــــن: but:

إنا متعود للعيش وحيداً I'm used to living alone.

(I live alone and I don't find it strange or new because I've been living alone for some time).

(أنا أعيش وحيداً أنا لا أجده غريب أو جديد لأنني أعيش وحيداً منذ فترة)
