this is the forth part of the translation series of English Grammar In Use Book ..
Past perfect simple and past perfect continuous work in the same way present perfect simple and continuous work but the difference is very obvious that both the past perfect simple and the past perfect continuous used in the past , any way let's study each one apart to understand it well
الماضي البسيط التام والماضي المستمر التام تعمل بنفس الطريقة التي تعمل بها المضارع البسيط والمستمر التام لكن الاختلاف واضح أن كلا الماضي البسيط والمستمر التام تستعمل بالماضي, على أية حال هيا لندرس كل واحد على حدة لنفهمه
جيدا.

past perfect continuous:-
الماضي المستمر التام:-
1-The past perfect continuous is (had + past participle+ the verb with ing) .
الماضي البسيط التام هو (الفعل ملك+ التصريف الثالث للفعل+ الفعل مع ال ing).
مثـــال:-
I was very tired when I arrived home, I'dbeen working hard all day.
أنا كنت جداً متعبة عندما وصلت البيت , كنت أعمل بصعوبة طوال اليوم .
2-you can say that something had been happening for a period of time before something also happened.
تستطيع أن تقول أن شيئاً حصل لفترة من الوقت قبل حدوث شيئاً آخر .
Ken gave up smoking two years ago. He'd been smoking for 30 years.
كين توقف عن التدخين منذ سنتان . هو كان يدخن لمدة 30 سنة.
3- Had been-ing (past perfect continuous) as we previously said that is the past Of have been-ing(present perfect continuous).
الماضي التام المستمر كما قلنا سابقاً أنه الماضي منالمضارع التام المستمر .
Example:-
I hope the bus comes soon. I've been waiting for 20 minutes. (before now).
أأمل أن يأتي الباص قريباً . أنا أنتظر ل20 دقيقة. (من قبل الآن)
لكــــــــــــــن في الماضي :
At least the bus came. I'd been waiting for 20 minutes(before the bus came).
اخبرا الباص أتى. أنا انتظرت ل20 دقيقة (من قبل أن يأتي الباص).
4- Compare had been doing (past perfect continuous) and was doing (past continuous):-
مقارنة بين الماضي التام المستمر والماضي المستمر:-
مثال:
Hanan was sitting in an armchair watching TV. She was very tired because she had been working so hard.
حنان كانت جالسة عال كرسي تشاهد التلفاز. كانت جداً متعبة لأنها كانت عملت بصعوبة .
5- some verbs(for example, know and want)are not normally used in the continuous.
لا يستعملالمستمر لبعض أفعال (مثل, يعلم و يريد) عادةً.
For example:
We were friends, we had known each other for years.
نحن كنا أصدقاء, عرفنا بعض لسنوات..
The past perfect simple:-
الماضي التــــــام البسيط:-
1- The past perfect simple is (had + past participle) .
الماضي البسيط التام هو (الفعل ملك+ التصريف الثالث للفعل).
Example:
مثـــــــال :
Sarah arrived home.
سارة وصلت البيت
2-when we saySarah arrived home. In number 1 That is the starting point of the story. Then, if we want to talk about things that happened before this time, we use the past perfect (had…).
عندما قلناسارة وصلت البيت (في رقم 1) تلك كانت نقطة البداية من القصة . بعد ذلك لو أننا نريد الكلام عن أشياء حصلت بعد ذلك الوقت , نستعمل الماضي التام البسيط
For example:
When Sarah arrived home, tom had just gone out.
عندما وصلت سارة إلى البيت , كان توم خارجاً.
Some more examples:
أمثلة أكثــــــــــــر :
When we got home last night, we found that somebody had broken into the flat.
عندما وصلنا المنزل ليلة أمس, وجدنا أنا شخصاً اقتحم الشقة.
Karen didn't want to come to the cinema with us because she had already seen the film.
كارين رفضت أن تأتي معنا للسينما لأنها شاهدت الفيلم.
The manwas sitting next to me on the plane was very nervous. He had never flown before.
الرجل الذي كان بجانبي بالطائرة كان غضبان جداً . هو لم يركب طائرةً قبل ذلك.
3-had done(past perfect) is the past Of have done(present perfect):
Compare:
Present perfect:
Who is that woman? I've never seen her before.
من تلك المرأة؟ لم أراها من قبل أبداً .
Past Perfect:
Ididn't know who she was, I'd never seen her before.
أنا لم أعلم من كانت, ما رأيتها قبل ذلك أبداً
Note:
In the first sentence we use (HAVE) because we are talking about thing happening in the present but in the second sentence we use (HAD)that can be shorten to ('d) because we're talking about thing happened in the past.
ملاحــــظة:
في الجملة الأولى نستعمل (HAVE)لأننا نتكلم عن شيء يحدث في الحاضر لكن في الجملة الثانية نستعمل (HAD) التي ممكن أن تختصر ل('d)لأننا نتكلم عن شي حدث بالماضي.
4- Compare the past perfect(I had done) and past simple(I did):
Was Tom At the party when you arrived? No, he had already gone home.
كان توم بالحفلة عندما وصلت؟ لا, ذهب إلى البيت.
But
لكـن
Was Tom there when you arrived? Yes but he went home soon afterwards.
كان توم هناك عندما وصلت؟ نعم لكن ذهب إلى البيت بعد ذلك.
Note:
ملاحــــظة:
في الجملة الأولى استعملنا had already gone لأنه ذهب إلى البيت قبل أن أصل إلى الحفلة في الجملة الثانية استعملنا went لأنه ذهب بعدما أتيت إلى الحفلة.
